ETO Elementary Reading Program Specialist

Betty R. James, a native of Quincy, Florida earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education from Florida A & M University, and a Masters of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Florida State University. Beginning my teaching career at Lillian E. Williams Elementary in Attapulgus, Georgia in 1975 as a first grade teacher; and matriculated to the Gadsden County School District, I served as an elementary school educator for the past 35 years at Stewart Street, Gretna and George W. Munroe Elementary Schools. I also served as a coordinator and a charter school administrator.

With more than thirty five years of experience, I served as reading coach at Gretna Elementary. After the school earned an FCAT grade of “A” I was transferred to George W. Munroe Elementary, which was classified as an “F” rated school. After two years the school progressed to a school grade of “B”. I retired in 2011 and after one year returned as a K-2 District Reading Specialist.

My accomplishments include being voted Teacher of the Year for two years, and being awarded one of the Top Ten Exemplary Literacy Programs for the State of Florida.

Community affiliations include the following: Past member and vice president of the Board of Directors of the Gadsden Arts Center; and chairperson of the education committee; Member and past correspondence secretary of the Gadsden Florida Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

My love for writing and impacting the lives of children afforded me the opportunity to publish a children’s book entitled; Against All Odds, artist Dean Mitchell’s Story. I also enjoy drawing and painting.

Wife of Reginald James, and mother of two girls who are married with two children each, I enjoy traveling and fine-dining experienced.
